A film most appropriate as a theater play, but – however – very nicely written, captivating.

Lesley Manville – in the role of anxious, chatty, instable, Mary – is simply unforgettable. As the years pass, she drinks glass after glass, clinging to the family of Gerri and Tom, refusing the advances of Ken, another old friend of the couple, equally a lover of alcohol. She cannot accept the fact that is aging. She fears also of loneliness and that is why always makes wrong choices.

Leigh’s characters discover their fate as their destiny is gradually revealed. The another year story is divided into seasons. Seemingly trivial, because it shows a year in the life of a happy couple, middle-aged, middle class, Gerri and Tom (Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen). But Leigh insists that these family stories, with a slow tempo of action, fascination and charm found in people’s lives, even “ordinary” or “boring.” And we give him justice, because the film has captivated us.

“Life is fascinating,” says Leigh, and not a difference between ordinary life and another. “The film is not about how we come to terms with life – as we face ourselves and others, as what we face,” said the director at a press conference.
